Americans Do Not Approve of the Bergdahl Swap

A new CBS News poll finds the prisoner swap of five Guantanamo Bay detainees for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is unpopular with a plurality of the general public, with 45% of respondents disapproving of the swap, with 37% approving.

The deal gets less popular in the specifics: 56% think the U.S. paid too high a price in the swap, a number that goes up to 65% among veterans. The price of the exchange is less popular among Republicans and independents, with Democrats equally divided, 42-39%.

72% think the Obama administration should have notified Congress beforehand, including 55% of Democrats. Meanwhile, 49% think the deal will increase the threat of terrorism, with 40% believing it will have no impact.
