Bernstein: Clinton Has Become ‘Specialist’ at Fudging the Truth
Legendary journalist Carl Bernstein — a Hillary Clinton biographer, doncha know — told CNN’s New Day Wednesday morning that the prohibitive Democratic frontrunner has had a “difficult relationship with the truth” in her more than two decades in the public eye, largely in response to her role as a central target in the culture wars.
On CNN yesterday, Clinton gave her first televised interview since announcing her candidacy. CNN’s Brianna Keilar questioned her about her trust deficit, and the candidate insisted people do trust her.
“We have to look at what politicians do in terms of fudging,” Bernstein explained. “It’s endemic in the profession. She’s become a specialist at it.”
“Why has she become a specialist?” he continued. “It has to do partly with the peculiarities of the Clinton situation. It had partly to do with the history of Bill Clinton and women and she’s had to defend him. It’s been very difficult to do with the whole truth and nothing but the truth. She’s been in a difficult position.”
