Biden Somehow Says ‘I Don’t Have Any Regrets’ About Running for Reelection
Former President Joe Biden said he has no regrets about his doomed decision to run for reelection last year.
On Friday, Biden spoke at a belated Memorial Day event in New Castle, Delaware, where he lamented the state of politics in the country. His remarks were his first since he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer this month.
“All the years I’ve been doing this, I never thought we’d get to this point,” he told the crowd. “But we are. Our troops don’t wear a uniform that say I’m a Democrat or I’m a Republican. It says I’m an American!”
Biden famously ended his reelection bid late in the campaign in July, just a few weeks after a disastrous debate performance with Donald Trump. One memorable lowlight involved a rambling response to a question about the national debt that ended with Biden declaring, “Look, we finally beat Medicare.”
Three weeks later, Biden dropped out and threw his support behind then-Vice President Kamala Harris, whose abbreviated campaign proved unsuccessful.
CNN’s Arlette Saenz caught up with the former president on Friday.
“And there’s also been a lot of discussion recently about your mental and physical capabilities while you were in office,” she said.
“You can see that I’m mentally incompetent and I can’t walk,” Biden joked.
“Do you want to reply to any of those reports, and also to the fact that there are some Democrats who are now questioning whether you should have run for reelection in the first place?” Saenz followed up.
“Why didn’t they run against me then?” Biden replied, referring to the dearth of Democratic challengers for the presidential nomination. “Because I would’ve beaten them.”
“Do you have any regrets?” the reporter inquired.
“No, I don’t have any regrets,” the former president responded.
Biden was challenged for the Democratic nomination by then Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Neither gained traction against the incumbent president. Kennedy eventually abandoned his bid and launched an independent run. Ultimately, he withdrew and supported Trump, who rewarded him by making him Secretary of Health and Human Services.
