Chris Cuomo Says Elon Musk Told Him To ‘Piss Off’ In Private Message and Blocked Him Over ADL ‘Hate Group’ Post
NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo revealed on Monday evening that Elon Musk told him to “piss off” in a private message and then blocked him after Cuomo asked about a post calling the Anti-Defamation League a “hate group.”
Cuomo revealed on NewsNation’s CUOMO that he tried asking Musk in his X direct messages about a post labeling the ADL a “hate group,” but things did not go well.
“The most powerful man in the media just wrote something that would get him fired if he worked for any self-respecting company, let alone a media platform, okay? If we see an attack on the ADL, the Anti-Defamation League, remember this moment,” Cuomo said.
In Musk’s post, he wrote, “The ADL hates Christians, therefore it is is a hate group.”
The post was in response to a user sharing an ADL report on “Christian identity,” which is a “religious ideology popular in right-wing circles.”
Cuomo noted the “Christian identity” movement is “fringe” and the report referenced was from 2017.
Musk posted his message on the same day that a gunman killed at least four people in a shooting at a Michigan church.
Musk has long been a vocal critic of the ADL, which has accused his platform of not adequately policing hate speech — particularly anti-Semitism and white supremacy.
Cuomo explained his interaction with Musk:
Everything about this is wrong, and to be honest, I first went to Elon and wanted him to explain this to me, because the guy’s a genius, you know? And he told me to piss off, and then it said I can’t send him messages anymore. And I find that regrettable. I was talking to him about maybe doing something on Twitter not too long ago, talk to his people. You know, I don’t believe in just, you trashing platforms. I think that we all have to be involved in how to get him to a better place. But, you know, he makes whatever choice he makes. I don’t hold it against him personally, but I do hold how he runs his business and how he handles himself. I do take that personally.
Cuomo showed a screenshot of the messages where Musk simply told him to “piss off.” Cuomo’s X account then informed him he could not direct message the platform’s owner. He added:
So I guess he does see some limits on free speech because he doesn’t let me have my messages with him. I just wish he would limit his own speech. He must know that that report can’t reasonably have anything to do with what just happened. First of all, the ADL report that he was referencing is from 2017, OK? I would also hope that a genius like him would know that the Christian identity movement has nothing to do with people like me who identify as Christian. It is a fringe fanaticism. That is a well-worn hate movement, well-documented for decades by the FBI and other groups.
