CNN Asks Doug Burgum After Trump’s JD Vance Pick ‘Do You Know How Close You Came to Being VP?’

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) suggested to CNN that he came fairly close to being former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick before Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) was announced.

“Do you know how close you came to being VP?” CNN’s Kate Bolduan asked Burgum on Friday morning at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

“I have a pretty good idea, yes,” Burgum said.

“Please tell us. How close is close?” Bolduan pressed.

Burgum praised the pick of Vance and suggested he’ll be on the campaign trail for Trump ahead of the November election. John Berman reacted with a “wow” after the exchange, arguing the governor’s reaction proved he likely nearly got the second spot on the Republican Party ticket.

“It was an honor to be under close consideration. I know the decision wasn’t made until Monday and I know there was a lot of back and forth between a lot of people, but I think that President Trump’s made a great choice in JD Vance,” Burgum said.

According to an NBC News report citing a Republican operative, Trump’s sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. made a last minute plea to not have Burgum on the ticket, both of them heavily pushing for Vance.

“Don Jr. and Eric went bats— crazy: ‘Why would you do something so stupid? He offers us nothing,'” the operative told NBC. “They were basically all like ‘JD, JD, JD.'”
