CNN Had So Many Trump Tapes to Air in One Segment They Mixed Them Up

Given the ever increasing number of controversial things President Donald Trump has uttered on tape, it can be tough to keep track of which one you’re playing on the air.

CNN demonstrated that today while reviewing the running list of the commander in chief’s flubs, from bragging about sexual assault to allowing a foreign authoritarian ruler to trample over the U.S. while standing on the world stage.

The network began its segment with a panel discussing the president’s attack on NBC News’ Lester Holt Thursday, whom he accused of “fudging [Trump’s] tape on Russia.” That was in reference to an interview between the two in May 2017 when Trump said he’d fired former FBI Director James Comey while thinking over the Russia probe.

Jim Sciutto noted that wasn’t the first time Trump has raised questions over the legitimacy of audio evidence. He took a similar tact with the infamous Access Hollywood tape, in which he made his “grab them by the pussy” remark about women.

Sciutto then moved onto a third scandal.

“There is another instance where the president tried to discredit evidence,” he said. “It’s not only on tape, but that the whole world saw. You may remember his meeting in Russia in Helsinki.”

The network meant to play footage of the moment Trump tried to walk back his public doubt of U.S. intelligence on Russian meddling during his joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but the Access Hollywood audio was heard instead.

“Oh, sorry, that’s the access Hollywood tape,” Scuitto realized, to the giggle of one of his guests. “We already referred to that.”

Playing the appropriate clip, Sciutto called Trump’s after-the-fact cleanups of his mistakes “part of a pattern.”
