CNN Political Director Warns of ‘Troubling Sign for Harris’ Compared to ‘Huge’ Trump Numbers in Key Demo

CNN Political Director David Chalian highlighted a “troubling sign” for Vice President Kamala Harris in her polling among a key demo.

Chalian joined CNN News Central on Wednesday to discuss late-August CNN polling conducted by SSRS. While the presidential remains remain competitive and most of Harris’s polling was positive, Chalian pointed to one area where former President Donald Trump appears to be head and shoulders above Harris.

According to the CNN data, non-college White voters prefer Trump by double digits in the key battleground states of Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. His biggest lead is in Georgia where among White voters with no college education, he’s scoring 71% support compared to Harris’s 27%. The most split state is Wisconsin where Harris nabbed 41% support compared to Trump’s 54%.

“If you look at the white voters without college degrees, this is a Trump base constituency, obviously. You see his huge numbers with this group. You see that this is a trouble sign for Harris,” Chalian reported.

He added Harris “probably wants” to make up some ground with this demo of voter, as well as White college educated voters in battleground states as she is also struggling there compared to other demos.

“She also, in places like Georgia, is not doing well with white college-educated voters. She probably wants to make up some ground with white college-educated voters across these battlegrounds as well,” he said.

CNN’s larger polling found that Georgia and Pennsylvania are key toss up swing states. Trump holds a smaller, but still significant lead among White voters without college. The former president pulled 63% support in the demo, while Harris pulled 31%.

The CNN polling data carries a 8.8% margin of error and was conducted August 23-29.
