CNN’s Abby Phillip Knocks Harris Campaign For Trying To ‘Float Above’ Immigration Debate

CNN’s Abby Phillip argued on Monday’s NewsNight that Vice President Kamala Harris’s “last-minute trip” to the U.S.-Mexico border scheduled for Friday during a trip to Arizona shows that the Democratic nominee realizes she has “to do something” on immigration.

Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans have repeatedly pointed fingers at Harris for the surge in migrants crossing the border in recent years. Early in his presidency, President Joe Biden tasked Harris with investigating the root causes of migration.

The decision, Phillip said, came after an NBC News poll that showed that people believed that former President Donald Trump would be “better on the issue” – leading Harris on the policy question by 21 points.

“She’s hoping to change the narrative that she’s soft on immigration,” the host said.

As panelists debated the finer points of the decision, some supported the idea while others pointed out that being filmed at the border was not going to “fix it.”

Phillip went on to criticize Harris’s approach to immigration and other key policy areas as a bid to “float above” the arguments.

One of the things about this moment, I mean, the Harris campaign has just been trying to float above it all, to float above the immigration arguments, float above some of the nitty-gritty details on some of this policy. But this shows that they realized they have to do something.

Watch above on CNN.
