CNN’s Berman Tackles White House’s ‘Writhing Hydra of Dishonesty’ on Russia Meeting: ‘Someone is Lying’
CNN’s John Berman railed against the White House’s evolving story on the Trump Tower meeting in 2016 between members of President Donald Trump‘s campaign and Russia.
A New York Times report out over the weekend on a memo sent to Mueller by Trump’s legal team revealed that Trump dictated a statement to the paper about the June 2015 meeting between son Don Jr. and a Russian lawyer promising dirt on Hillary Clinton. Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow and White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders have both denied he had dictated it.
That memo, New Day‘s new host said on Monday morning, “opens up a huge can of worms for the White House.”
“Actually, it’s not worms, it’s more like a writhing hydra of dishonesty,” Berman said. “And just like the mythical creature, you chop off one lie, and two more emerge in its place.”
Berman went on to note that Trump dictated the letter, despite Sekulow claiming last July that the statement wasn’t written by the president multiple times.
He also played a clip of Sanders saying, “he certainly didn’t dictate” in a press briefing.
“But wait, his lawyers say ‘the president dictated.’ Certainly he did. So say his lawyers,” Berman replied. “There’s a lot of talk about the difference between a lie and a falsehood or an untruth. Here, someone is lying. Either the president lied to Jay Sekulow and Sarah Sanders, or they lied to us.”
The CNN host also noted that Trump’s statement itself was misleading, casting the meeting as primarily about Russian adoption instead of dirt on Clinton.
Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani‘s defense of the revelation that “our recollection keeps changing” didn’t cut it for Berman either.
“It seems Mr. Mayor the biggest failure in recollection was the recollection to actually tell the truth,” Berman said.
