CNN’s Tapper Grills DeWine Over GOP Efforts to Block Electoral College Certification: ‘This is About Fomenting Lies’
CNN’s Jake Tapper pressed Governor Mike DeWine (R- OH) on whether he recognizes that President Donald Trump’s baseless attempts to dispute the 2020 election are the reason why so many people are doubting its legitimacy.
The interview between the two on State of the Union began with Tapper asking DeWine where he stands on the Republican party’s infighting over their attempts to block the Electoral College’s results in Congress. DeWine took a two-sided approach by saying “there some problems in the system as far as potential fraud or fraud that occurred,” though “we have not seen anything that rises to the level that would have changed the outcome of the election.”
As DeWine continued to say there are “a lot of people” concerned about the election’s integrity, Tapper countered that that’s “because they have been lied to, Governor. They have been lied to by President Trump for weeks.” DeWine continued with his argument in favor of a bipartisan election security commission, but Tapper followed up by invoking multiple Republicans who say “people in your party are doing real, lasting damage to American democracy by fully embracing these dangerous conspiracy theories.”
“This isn’t about actual allegations of legitimate fraud,” he continued. “This is about fomenting lies in order to undermine democracy.”
Tapper and DeWine continued to lock horns over why so many people are questioning the election, but as the governor sidestepped the matter, the CNN anchor put it squarely on the fact that “Trump and his minions have been lying for weeks about this election.”
“The solution is they should stop lying,” Tapper said. He also predicted that no matter what commission is assembled, as per DeWine’s suggestion, Trump will inevitably attack them “the same way he has attacked every single Republican who has stood up for election integrity.”
