CNN’s Toobin: Trump Has ‘Absolutely No Moral Authority’ in Calling for National Unity

Shortly after the news broke that multiple devices were sent to CNN, the Obamas,  the Clinton, a sitting Congresswoman and others in an act of terrorism, President Donald Trump read a statement from the East Room calling for unity.

The president said this earlier today, in response to the threats: “We have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the U.S.”

Yet, according to CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin,  Trump’s words were “ridiculous” considering that POTUS is the “worst messenger” in this situation.

“I thought the idea that he is calling for national unity when he just last week was celebrating a congressman for assaulting — criminally assaulting a reporter,” Toobin said as images of the aftermath of the bomb scare at CNN flashed on the screen. “I mean, he is the worst messenger there. The idea that he has any standing to claim that the waters should be calm is completely bogus. I mean, he had to say what the speech writers put in front of him. But he has absolutely no credibility on this subject.”

He added: “Absolutely no moral authority. And he is reaping what he showed.”

Despite Trump’s call for unity earlier today, Trump headed off a political rally — as planned — Wednesday night.

He did not respond to the press’ questions about how he might soften his tone given the circumstances and his own words.
