Cuomo Defends NYPD from ‘False and Abusive’ Attacks During Ramos Memorial Speech
Governor Andrew Cuomo spoke this morning at the memorial service for Officer Rafael Ramos. He sent a message to Ramos’ family that “we will be here, not just in this hectic aftermath, but even more in the quiet times, for the rest of your life.”
He had some light moments talking about Ramos’ two sons, including their love of the Mets, and said he was struck by how they and their family have shown such “pride and dignity” in these trying times.
But Cuomo also used the opportunity to go into a full-throated defense of the NYPD, saying they’ve done “an especially extraordinary job these past few weeks.” He praised their professionalism and dedication as they’ve been on the receiving end of some abuse:
“I frankly was amazed at the discipline and professionalism that the NYPD demonstrated. The NYPD protected the right of freedom of speech even though they themselves were the target of false and abusive chants and tirades by some. What a beautiful testament to their professionalism.”
“An attack on the NYPD,” he added, “is an attack on all of us. It’s an attack on our system of justice.”
