Dana Perino Urges Trump To ‘Declare Communications Bankruptcy’ Amid Iran War
Fox News host Dana Perino offered a novel proposal for President Donald Trump on Monday, suggesting that he “declare communications bankruptcy” amid the ongoing Iran war.
Nearly six months after the U.S. and Israel began their bombardment of the country, Iran remains firmly in control of the Strait of Hormuz, having essentially shuttered the key waterway after the bombings began. Trump has said for months that Iran wants to make a deal “badly,” but the Iranians have insisted that any deal involve the unfreezing of the country’s assets and reparations for the damage done during the war.
The war has been largely unpopular since the beginning. Currently, 64% of Americans say the war has not been worth fighting. Just 33% say it has, according to an AP-NORC poll.
On Monday’s edition of The Five on Fox News, guest co-host Kayleigh McEnany pointed to a Wall Street Journal report noting that hardliners in Iran are gearing up for a longer and costlier conflict.
“Dana, it’ll be interesting to see where we go from here,” McEnany said.
“Because they’ve shown that they are willing to take the pain,” Perino replied. “It’s the people of Iran who are suffering, and these old guards, they are just like, ‘Fine, bring it on.’ And then they said, ‘We’re going to go on offense.’ And it’s like, well, with what? But they have some key things, which is one, the Strait of Hormuz. What President Trump has done has been stalwart from the beginning… Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
Despite Trump’s claim, U.S. intelligence has concluded that Iran was not building a nuclear weapon. Indeed, after bombing Iran last year, Trump insisted that Iran’s ability to build a nuclear weapon had been “totally obliterated.”
Perino then said that what is needed is a communications pivot to convince the American public that the war is worthwhile:
I think that, where I usually would say, there’s a fact problem when people are saying there’s a communications problem. I think right now it wouldn’t hurt them to declare communications bankruptcy and clear the slate, and start fresh.
And just one idea I had in the commercial break. Bring in the pool. That’s like a representative of several different types of reporters that are assembled every day. So it’s a random selection, bring them in, sit them down with the secretary of war, Secretary of State, the National Security Advisor, maybe even John Ratcliffe at the CIA if they are willing, and say, “Here’s where we are. Answer every question until they’re done.” And start fresh, because I think that they do need a communications reset.
