Donald Trump on Not Paying Any Income Tax: ‘That Makes Me Smart’
During the first 2016 presidential debate, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump responded to an attack from Democratic rival Hillary Clinton that he hadn’t paid anything in federal taxes by saying that made him “smart.”
Clinton was arguing that Trump wasn’t releasing his tax returns unless there was something he was trying to hide. “Maybe he doesn’t want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he’s paid nothing in federal taxes,” she speculated.
“Because the only years that anybody’s ever seen were a couple of years when he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license,” she continued. “And they showed he didn’t pay any federal income tax.”
“That makes me smart,” Trump retorted.
Clinton ignored the interruption.“So that means zero for troops, zero for vets, zero for schools or health. And I think probably he’s not all that enthusiastic about having the rest of our country see what the real reasons are, because it must be something really important, even terrible, that he’s trying to hide,” she said.
