Fox Host Cites Andy McCarthy to Shoot Down Trump’s Obama ‘Treason’ Accusation
Fox News’ Todd Piro shot down President Donald Trump’s claim that former President Barack Obama could be prosecuted for treason during a conversation with Stuart Varney on Wednesday that saw him cite Fox News contributor Andy McCarthy’s analysis.
The segment began with clips of Trump speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday, where he said the following:
it’s time to go after people. Obama’s been caught directly.
If you look at that-, those papers, they have him stone cold, and it was President Obama. It wasn’t lots of people all over the place. It was them, too. But the leader of the gang was President Obama.
You know, I like to say, let’s give it time. It’s there. He’s guilty. This was treason.
“[Director of National Intelligence] Tulsi Gabbard says she’ll be releasing more documents. Again, we look forward to seeing them. But the use of the word treason, I found that a bit strong,” observed Varney before turning to Piro.
“It is a strong word, Stu, and look, on the one hand, we have gone after presidents before. We have, you know, put them through the wringer, both in Congress and in terms of prosecutions,” replied the Fox & Friends First co-host. “On the other hand, Stu, Andy McCarthy, who I know you’ve spoken to many times on this program, says there is no means of prosecuting President Obama or, quite frankly, even John Brennan or James Comey with regard to this revelation.”
“That said, there is potential for the DOJ, once they receive all these documents, to determine, at least in the case of a John Brennan, that there was that, you know, lying to Congress or, you know, perjury in front of Congress. So stay tuned, I’m curious to see if there’s anything in these documents,” he added. “My only skepticism is wouldn’t we have seen these documents before in one of these other investigations, whether it’s the Mueller probe or the John Durham investigation.”
McCarthy outlined his disagreement with Gabbard’s characterization of various documents from the late Obama administration in a column for National Review earlier this week.
