Quite a bit of the political world’s focus has been turned towards Virginia these past few weeks as the governor’s race has heated up. Finally, Election Day has arrived, and while Democrat Ralph Northam is seen as the favorite as he holds a 3.3-point lead in the RealClearPolitics polling average, Republican Ed Gillespie has narrowed the margin. It appears that one of the ways Gillespie has cut into Northam’s polling lead has been by appealing to Trump voters with ads focusing on the MS-13 gangs, Confederate monuments, and how he’ll bring back law and order.
During an appearance on Fox News this morning, Washington Examiner columnist Byron York reminded everyone that despite Gillespie’s Trumpian turn of late, the former Republican National Committee chair is hardly an anti-establishment outsider.
“Ed Gillespie is as establishment Republican as you can get,” York said. “A former chairman of the RNC, a veteran of the Bush — W. Bush — White House, a longtime lobbyist — he’s an establishment Republican and a Washington creature.”
He continued, “On the other hand, I think he sees what way the wind is blowing among a lot of the Republican electorate. Has clearly embraced some of the president’s positions on social issues.”
York also noted that Gillespie is currently behind in the polls. When anchor Bill Hemmer noted that he has been closing on Northam, York pointed out that Gillespie was trailing in almost all the most recent polls.
