GOP Leader to MSNBC: There ‘Absolutely’ Should Be Hearings on Garner Case
Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), the chair of the House Republican Conference, called for hearings to look into the details surrounding the death of Eric Garner and the subsequent non-indictment of the police officer, Daniel Pantaleo.
“I think we all have serious questions that need to be addressed, and we need to understand what happened, why this decision was made,” McMorris Rodgers said Thursday morning on Morning Joe. “I would call for the House to have those hearings so that we can better understand [it].”
The congresswoman also said this case has “raised a lot of questions” about the appropriate level of force local law enforcement officials can use when making arrests.
While there seems to be rare bipartisan agreement that Officer Pantaleo should have at least been indicted, McMorris Rodgers’ comments provide a stark contrast to those of her GOP colleague, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), who has said the grand jury made the right decision in choosing not to indict the officer.
