‘It’s a Terrible Thing’: Trump Doesn’t Contradict Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Claim That Israel Is Committing ‘Genocide’
Asked whether he agrees with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) about Israel committing “genocide” in Gaza, President Donald Trump elided the question and called the situation “a terrible thing.”
Israel is facing increasing amounts of pressure from the international community as Gazans face famine due to Israel’s restriction of aid entering the territory. The Israel Defense Forces and IDF contractors have killed more than 1,000 Gazans at food distribution sites.
During a press conference at the White House on Thursday, Philip Melancthon Wegmann of RealClearPolitics pointed to Greene’s remarks from Tuesday, when she slammed fellow GOP Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) for saying Gazans can “starve away” until Hamas releases the remaining Israeli hostages.
“It’s the most truthful and easiest thing to say that Oct 7th in Israel was horrific and all hostages must be returned, but so is the genocide, humanitarian crisis, and starvation happening in Gaza,” Greene posted.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has said that what is occurring there is a case of genocide,” Wegmann said. “Do you agree?”
“Oh, it’s terrible what’s occurring there, yeah,” Trump replied. “It’s a terrible thing. People are very hungry. You know, the United States gave $60 million for food. And it’s a shame because you know, I don’t see the results of it. And we gave it to people that in theory are watching over fairly closely. We want Israel to watch over it.”
Trump reiterated the claim that Hamas is intercepting food intended for civilians, though two Israeli military officials told The New York Times this week that there is no evidence for the allegation.
“Nobody said thank you,” the president said of U.S. aid to Gaza, a complaint he made earlier this week. “But I didn’t need the ‘thank you.’ I just wanted the people to get fed, and we’re helping out financially with that situation. It’s a terrible situation.”
