‘It’s Gonna Be Corrected’: Mike Johnson Admits Elon Musk’s Mistakes When Confronted Over Cancer Research Cuts

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) joined Fox News’s Outnumbered on Friday and was asked about Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency. Johnson was first asked to react to a left-leaning commentator saying Musk’s cuts to the government were fueled by racism.

“This is patently absurd. For them to say this has anything whatsoever to do with race, it has to do with government largesse. The government is too big, it does too many things, and it does almost nothing. Well. And so what Elon has been able to do is crack the code,” Johnson replied, adding:

I mentioned earlier that Congress has not been able to do its oversight responsibility for decades, because the bureaucracy has been hiding the data. I mean, we didn’t know that USAID was funding transgender operas in Peru. I mean, obviously, everyone would have struck that down. So Elon has gotten inside.

He has algorithms crawling through the data as he says the data doesn’t lie. And the American people are with us on this. It is absurd to say that this is anything other than restoring fiscal sanity, and we are long overdue in getting that done.

“Because at the end of the day, Marie isn’t fiscal responsibility isn’t the dollar that the whole point is. It is bipartisan?” followed up co-host Emily Compagno to liberal contributor Marie Harf.

“Sure. I think, look, I worked in the federal government for ten years. There are certainly ways it could be more efficient. This is moving fast and breaking things and hurting a lot of people in the process,” Harf replied, adding:

And the government shouldn’t be in the business of firing a veteran who served their years for 20, served their country for 20 years, and then having to fix it later. I don’t trust that it will fix it later. I just don’t. And you can come up. Look, there are a lot of comical things that President Trump mentioned in the state of the Union that you mentioned about the government spending money on. A lot of things that are getting cut are cancer research.

Support for scientists across this country, saving the lives of children with cancer. That’s just one. So we can talk about cuts, but doing it this way hurts Americans. It’s irresponsible. And quite frankly, that’s why you see not just paid protesters — with all due respect.

Some constituents in Republican districts who are coming to these town halls and saying, I’m a veteran, I lost my job. I have come to work every day. How can you and Elon Musk makes millions of dollars every day from the American government, and you’re firing these people?

“Do you agree this is race? Or do you?” pressed Compagno.

“Oh, no, I don’t think it’s racist. It’s okay. I didn’t answer that question. No, I just think it’s irresponsible and harmful,” Harf added.

Johnson replied, “So stay tuned. Stay tuned because it’s going to be corrected. And I’ve talked to Elon about this personally and many of us have. He has completely pure motives. He’s trying to make the government work better for the people. All the people in the essential employees and the people doing great work will come back.”

DOGE has received heavy criticism in recent weeks for firing off key workers and then trying to rehire them, notably the workers who maintain nuclear weapons sites across the U.S.
