Jamie Raskin Accuses Trump of Trying to ‘Convert’ Presidency Into ‘Moneymaking Enterprise’
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) accused former President Donald Trump of attempting to turn the presidency into a “monkeymaking enterprise.”
Recently, House Democrats discovered that the Republican leader took nearly $8 million from foreign governments while serving as president. During an interview on Sunday with MSNBC anchor Symone Townsend, Raskin noted that he has not received a response from Trump after sending him a letter demanding he return the money.
Democrats on the House Oversight Committee published a report earlier this month claiming Trump-owned companies received money from foreign business partners in 20 different countries. .
“So, Donald Trump did something nobody had ever done before. He tried to convert the presidency into a moneymaking enterprise,” Raskin said on MSNBC.
The report claims that Trump’s hotels in Washington and Las Vegas received $5.6 million from China along with Trump Tower in New York.
“The Constitution says that the president or any other federal official cannot accept a present and emolument, which means a payment, in office or title of any kind, whatever, that’s in the Constitution, from a king, a prince, a foreign government without the consent of Congress,” he added. “Donald Trump came to Congress zero times to ask to keep this money.”
The Maryland lawmaker also slammed Trump’s defense that he never took his federal annual salary of $400,000.
“You’re not supposed to be on the payroll for Saudi monarchs and Chinese communist bureaucrats. You’re supposed to be getting paid by the American people,” he concluded.
