Joe Scarborough Baffled by WH ‘Freak Out’ That ‘Blew Up’ Ossoff’s Natalie Harp Jab: ‘Makes No Sense!’
Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough was so baffled by the White House “freak out” over Senator Jon Ossoff’s (D-GA) mention of President Donald Trump’s aide Natalie Harp, which turned a “throwaway line” into a week-long saga, that he asked aloud if the administration had done it “on purpose.”
During a reelection campaign rally on Sunday, Ossoff took a swipe at Trump, saying: “He golfs and trades stocks. See, he doesn’t want to do the job; he wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie to their apparently defenseless flying palace.”
The White House responded furiously, with Communications Director Steven Cheung attacking the senator in a post: “Jon Jackoff has to be the biggest cuck loser in politics.” MAGA media figures quickly piled on Ossoff over the remark, while liberals celebrated the jab.
But the ensuing controversy has increasingly shifted attention away from Ossoff and toward Harp herself, with media scrutiny over the course of the week focusing heavily on her role and access inside the White House as well as her relationship to the president.
On Thursday, The Daily Beast published letters of devotion from Harp, previously reported on but unseen, that had been left for Trump.
On Friday’s Morning Joe, Scarborough argued that “nothing about this has made sense” as he attempted to understand the White House response, particularly from a president, he claimed, knows how to “play the press” better than most.
“By the way, I spoken to Natalie Harp a good bit, as most people have, very polite and polite, kind conversations. Been in the White House and I’ve talked to Donald Trump, the president, and seen her there, never once assumed anything inappropriate was going on, which the suggestion coming from Republicans that Ossoff somehow suggested that with this throwaway line,” he said.
He continued: “[What] I thought was bizarre in this sense, that it was a phrase in a speech that would have come and gone and nobody – it would have been forgotten! But the White House, you talk about protesting too much! The White House actually blew this up into this massive story with a tweet that I just thought was so over the top, and bringing in a reporter’s children. And all of this, again, for a throwaway phrase, which again, standing on its own, as even [Fox News host] Jesse Watters said, pales so in comparison to everything Donald Trump says every day, that for the White House to freak out like that, to melt down like that, they made this story into something it would not have been!”
Scarborough then argued what he found “most intriguing” was that Trump was, in his view, “has got this touch” politically when it comes to playing the media – better than former President Ronald Reagan, who the host said was not even a “close second.”
“And yet this White House operation has been trumped, they were trumped by Ossoff,” he said.
He added: “They have given Jon Ossoff a week of free press on a phrase that would have dissolved in the mist by the next morning. They have! They have!”
“I can’t even fathom how much money this guy has raised over the last week! I can’t even fathom how much the Trump White House has elevated him. So much so that I’m asking myself, are they doing this on purpose?” he exclaimed. “Because this makes no sense to me. But they’ve been trumped by Jon Ossoff.”
