John Kerry to CNN: U.S. Is Not ‘at War’ with ISIS

After President Barack Obama delivered his address to the nation last night, you would be forgiven for thinking the United States in now at war with ISIS. But according to Secretary of State John Kerry, this is not the case.

CNN’s Global Affairs Correspondent Elise Labott caught up with Kerry during a summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Thursday and asked him if America is “at war” with ISIS, “because it sure sounded in President Obama’s speech that we were.”

Kerry told Labott that that was not the correct terminology to use. Instead, he said the U.S. is involved in a “very significant counter-terrorism operation” that will unfold in many phases over time.
