Jonah Goldberg Hits ‘Smug,’ ‘Condescending’ Media Types Scolding Ebola Panic
There is a fair amount of concern over Ebola, and of course there’s a lot of media hype over it. Other corners of the media think the panic is way overblown, but on Fox News today Jonah Goldberg thinks those people are just acting smug and condescending in talking down to people about how scared they should be.
First off, Goldberg thinks the idea that the entire country is panicked about Ebola is way overblown. In fact, he doesn’t think there’s much panic at all. (In fact, a poll taken just this month found that only 23 percent of people are worried about contracting Ebola.) But, Goldberg continued, “A lot of smug people in the mainstream media talk about how there’s a panic in this country.”
He said the real panic here isn’t over getting Ebola, it’s over the government that managed a botched health care rollout managing the containment of a virus. Goldberg explained, “We get a lot of condescending stuff from a lot of people in the mainstream media, a lot of people in government, who make it seem as if any rational concern about this is irrational.”
Kirsten Powers argued that the media itself has been hyping up the panic and giving the sense that “we are on the verge of a pandemic.”
