Jonathan Gruber: I’m Sorry for My ‘Insulting’ Obamacare Remarks
MIT economics professor Jonathan Gruber used his allotted time today on Capitol Hill to apologize for his controversial remarks about the formation of Obamacare.
The so-called “architect” of the Affordable Care Act came under fire in recent months when video emerged of him attributing the bill’s passage to a “lack of transparency” and “the stupidity of the American voter.”
Speaking Tuesday morning before the House Oversight Committee, Gruber expressed contrition for his past remarks. “I sincerely apologize for conjecturing with a tone of expertise and for doing so in such a disparaging fashion,” he said. “I knew better. I know better. I’m embarrassed and I’m sorry.”
He admitted some of his comments were “mean and insulting” and doubly apologized for the “glib, thoughtless and sometimes downright insulting comments.”
The economist stressed that while he “behaved badly,” his own “inexcusable arrogance is not a flaw in the Affordable Care Act.”
