Kirsten Powers, Judith Miller Laud ‘Awakened’ Media’s DOJ Coverage: ‘Lapdogs’ Became ‘Watchdogs’
Judith Miller and Kirsten Powers appeared on a Fox News panel with host Jon Scott on Friday — to examine how the mainstream media outlets are handling the issues of the Justice Department’s actions against the Associated Press and Fox News reporter James Rosen. While the media were once complacent, both agreed, and applauded, that they now seem to be waking up to reality.
Miller quipped that this is the first time Attorney General Eric Holder has had to assume responsibility for something. “The press isn’t buying it,” she argued. “For once, many in the media, who were kind of lapdogs to this administration, have suddenly become watchdogs.”
Agreeing, Powers noted that it appears the Obama administration has finally crossed the line — and the media’s been “awakened” them to the administration’s attitude toward the press and whistleblowers. Holder’s been dodging bullets time and time again, Miller reiterated, and “we really do need some outside scrutiny, some steady scrutiny by the press.” An internal review isn’t going to cut it.
The press hopefully won’t let up heading into the summer, she added. Comparing scandals, Powers, as others have, attributed the spotlight on the AP/Rosen issues to the media’s self-interest. Benghazi, for example, didn’t get that kind of treatment, she argued. The administration’s succeeded with their message that those are partisan issues.
