Larry David Assaults Elmo Live on the Today Show: ‘Somebody Had to Do It!’

Seinfeld creator Larry David assaulted Sesame Street star Elmo live on Thursday’s Today show before issuing an apology for the violent outburst.

After the hosts of The Today Show interviewed Elmo and his father following Elmo’s viral wellness check on social media, David appeared in the background and started to assault Elmo, grabbing his face and taking a swing as hosts Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Craig Melvin screamed.

As David walked away, Guthrie said, “Larry, you’ve gone too far this time!”

“Somebody had to do it!” David shot back.

A few minutes later, following a weather report, David apologized to Elmo at the insistence of Guthrie.

“Do you have something you want to say to Elmo?” she asked, prompting David to say, “Elmo, I just want to apologize”

Elmo replied, “Thank you, Larry. Elmo accepts your apology, Larry.”

“Okay, alright, thank you,” mocked David in a high-pitched voice, seemingly impersonating Elmo.

Guthrie concluded, “Elmo, you are such a sweetheart. Thank you, Elmo. Larry, you are not a sweetheart.”

Elmo went viral this week after he tweeted, “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”

According to NBC News, social media users – including celebrities – proceeded to “trauma dump” on the Sesame Street star, sparking a conversation about mental health and wellbeing.

Even President Joe Biden reacted to Elmo’s viral post, tweeting, “I know how hard it is some days to sweep the clouds away and get to sunnier days. Our friend Elmo is right: We have to be there for each other, offer our help to a neighbor in need, and above all else, ask for help when we need it. Even though it’s hard, you’re never alone.”
