When David Letterman sat down for an exit interview with The New York Times’ Dave Itzkoff last month, he named CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Jane Pauley as someone whose career he could imagine for himself post-retirement from the Late Show. So it is fitting that Pauley has conducted what will likely be the last interview with Letterman before he signs off for good next Wednesday.

In a preview of the longer CBS Sunday Morning piece that will air this weekend, Letterman described himself as “naked and afraid” heading into his final show.

“Any enormous, uprooting change in my life has petrified me, really petrified me,” Letterman continued, “but once I have come through the other side, the reward has been unimaginable.” But he also admitted that “getting back into television” some time in the future will become more difficult to accomplish.

Letterman also predicted that he will never be back in the Ed Sullivan Theater building after he last show, meaning don’t expect to see him as a guest on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “I think it would just be emotionally too difficult for me,” he said, “because I just don’t want to come back and see others living our lives.”
