Luigi Mangione Retains Frequent Cable News Guest and Former Federal Prosecutor as Attorney
Luigi Mangione, the man suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week in New York, has hired a high-powered attorney and a former CNN legal analyst to represent him in the case.
CNN reported Friday evening that Mangione had retained Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a former federal prosecutor and a frequent guest on cable news.
According to CNN analyst Jennifer Rodgers, who joined Friday’s edition of The Source, Agnifilo is an experienced heavy hitter in the courtroom. She will represent Mangione in New York, where he has been charged with second-degree murder.
Rodgers told host Kaitlan Collins that Agnifilo is supremely qualified to handle such a high-profile case.
“So, really, what you want is a lawyer who can take you through the real case, right?” Rodgers said. “The pretrial and, of course, the trial. And Karen is the sort of person with all of her many years of experience as a trial lawyer. And in this actual courthouse and in this actual office. That’s the sort of person you want.”
CNN further reported:
Mangione’s new attorney will be taking on his case as investigators have amassed new evidence in recent days, with police telling CNN this week the 3D-printed gun he had on him when he was arrested matches the three shell casings found at the crime scene in Midtown Manhattan. His fingerprints also matched those investigators found on items near the scene.
The fingerprint and firearms disclosures come as authorities dig into Mangione, who remains in custody in Pennsylvania on gun-related charges as he fights extradition to New York. As of Friday, however, there were indications Mangione “may waive” his extradition next week, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
A representative for Agnifilo declined to comment to CNN about her involvement in the case.
Mangione is currently being held without bail in Pennsylvania. According to police in New York, Thompson was walking in Manhattan last Wednesday when he was shot from behind by Mangione.
