Maher: Americans Love British Accents Because We Know We’re Not ‘Serious’ People

 

maher3Bill Maher ended his show last night by asking what the hell Americans find so fascinating about the British accent and, more importantly, why people won’t take something seriously unless it’s said with a British accent.

He cited tons of movies and TV shows where British accents are the standard, even though nothing is set in England, and deduced Americans love the British accent as a way of covering up our “massive insecurity.”

From there, he went off on how not very “serious’ America is, citing the Avengers, climate change denial, the Palins, Pharrell‘s hat, and pajama jeans. Yep.

Now, it’s unclear why British accents were particularly bothering Maher now, but there’s a big, British, also-at-HBO factor to consider…
