Meghan McCain Clashes With View Hosts on WHCD: ‘This Is a Big Gift to Trump Supporters’

While Michelle Wolf‘s White House Correspondents’ Dinner routine mocked President Donald Trump‘s administration, Meghan McCain thinks he’ll be the one with the last laugh.

“I will say this is a big gift to Trump supporters,” McCain said Tuesday on The View.

“And there’s already this implication when you hear people like Jim Acosta saying Trump supporters…their elevators don’t go to the top floor, there’s an idea that the media, especially in D.C., hate the Trump administration, hate Republicans, hate people in the middle of the country,” she added.

Wolf’s speech was denounced by the White House Correspondents’ Association, who said her jokes, which included personal jabs at Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, didn’t turn out to be supportive of the unifying message they hoped to promote. McCain noted the list of journalists working for left-leaning outlets, including The New York Times‘ Maggie Haberman and MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski, who’ve criticized Wolf’s remarks.

McCain said there was a time when she attended the dinner with her father, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), but that “once it started turning into this sort of like celebrity Oscar red carpet event,” she decided “this isn’t something I really want to be a part of.”

However, none of The View‘s other co-hosts seemed to agree with McCain’s assessment of the dinner, firing back at her critiques.

“It was about the celebration of journalism and the First Amendment,” Sunny Hostin said, adding that she felt Acosta’s comment was “completely taken out of context.”

Whoopi Goldberg also gave a blunt response to McCain’s comments, saying, “I take issue with you saying that we hate the middle of the country. That’s not true.”
