Mehdi Hasan Confronts Lincoln Project Adviser: Your Own Former Colleagues Are ‘Calling for You to Be Shut Down’

Mehdi Hasan spoke with Lincoln Project adviser Stuart Stevens Tuesday night about the current state of the Republican party, but he also brought up the Lincoln Project itself to confront Stevens about the controversies surrounding the organization.

Amid the scandal over serious allegations against John Weaver and reports on when others in the Lincoln Project were first aware of them, co-founder George Conway and former advisers to the group said they should shut down.

On his Peacock program, Hasan played a clip of former adviser Susan del Percio saying she doesn’t know how the Lincoln Project survives this, and even added, “The people at the top are disappointing, to say the very least, and I just hope they’re not found to be criminals.”

So Hasan asked Stevens, “Your own former advisers are hoping you’re not criminals and calling for you to be shut down. Where does that leave your organization?”

Stevens called it an “absurd allegation” and defended the Lincoln Project by calling it “the most successful Super PAC in the history of America.”

He argued the group has had a “tremendous impact on where we are now” and said, “I think that this idea that somehow or another that you expected the Lincoln Project to be something that would be like a perfect organization is unrealistic.”

“Oh, come on, Stuart,” Hasan responded. “There’s a big difference between being a perfect organization and what the accusations — very serious accusations that have been leveled against the Lincoln Project.”

Stevens pointed to the investigation underway and told Hasan, “Taking that step shows that they believe in transparency. Let’s see what that report says.”

At one point Hasan went back to his comments about their success, remarking, “A lot of people will raise an eyebrow when you say it’s the most successful PAC, because they’ll say we haven’t seen evidence that you actually changed votes on the ground.”

He also questioned Stevens about a recent report on the Lincoln Project’s finances and even straight-up asked, “How much did you make?”
