Mika Brzezinski Cuts In as Joe Scarborough Pitches This ‘Non-Controversial Comedian’ to Host WHCA Dinner in Snarky Jab
Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski cut off her husband and co-host Joe Scarborough’s as he snarkily asked that “non-controversial comedian” Bill Burr be called in to headline the White House Correspondents dinner.
Scarborough’s jab came after the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) broke with tradition to decide not to have a comedian host the event at all, canceling a planned performance by comedian Amber Ruffin amid escalating tensions with the Trump administration.
WHCA President Eugene Daniels said Saturday the board unanimously voted to drop the comedy slot, emphasizing a desire to “honor journalists” rather than contribute to “the politics of division.”
The move curiously followed criticism from White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich, who attacked Ruffin’s inclusion due to her recent jabs at the administration. Ruffin, a writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers, had mocked Trump policies on-air, including a joke about renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
Joining the Morning Joe crew after the first hour on Monday as co-hosts Jonathan Lemire and Brzezinski were discussing the story, Scarborough offered his take in an apparent jibe at the WHCA, suggesting an equally provocative critic of the Trump administration take Ruffin’s place.
“But why don’t we have like a non-controversial comedian like Bill Burr?” he offered.
“Yeah, that wouldn’t raise any eyebrows,” Lemire replied to the joke.
Scarborough continued: “He could just talk about Elon for an hour.”
“Listen, okay, to be continued,” Brzezinski interjected after the shot that clearly left her feeling uncomfortable.
After a brief moment of awkward silence, Lemire jumped in: “As of now, the dinner is still slated for the end of April. But there’s questions growing, whether it will happen.”
Brzezinski quickly pushed the conversation on to other topics.
Burr has mocked and trashed Elon Musk several times in recent weeks as part of an ongoing feud, criticizing the billionaire as a “nerd” and “evidently a Nazi.”
