MSNBC’s Alicia Menendez Speaks Out on Father’s Indictment: Colleagues Will Continue to ‘Aggressively’ Cover Case
MSNBC host Alicia Menendez addressed the indictment of her father, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) Saturday evening, telling her audience she was not going to comment on the case, but expected her colleagues to continue to “aggressively” cover the story.
On Sept. 22, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced the indictment of Sen. Menendez, his wife Nadine Menendez, and three New Jersey businessmen on charges related to a bribery scheme allegedly designed to benefit the government of Egypt.
The indictment included numerous salacious details, including accusations that the Menendezes were given cash that was used to pay for a Mercedes-Benz convertible, and that authorities seized gold bars and cash stuffed into the pockets of a jacket emblazoned with Sen. Menendez’s name from the couple’s home.
In the days following the indictment, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D), top leaders within the New Jersey Democratic Party, and a growing list of prominent Democratic senators have called for Menendez to resign. Despite this, Sen. Menendez has remained defiant, denying the allegations against him and making a statement in which he insisted he would be “exonerated” and said he had no intention to resign.
Alicia Menendez, the daughter of the senator and his first wife (Nadine Menendez is her stepmother), has hosted American Voices with Alicia Menendez on MSNBC since September 2020. She addressed the controversy at the top of her show Saturday evening:
Hey everyone, I’m Alicia Menendez. Welcome to American Voices. We have a lot to get to tonight, but I want to begin on a personal note.
Last week, a grand jury indicted U.S. Senator Bob Menendez. This past week, dozens of members of his own party have demanded his resignation. I have been watching, along with all of you, as a citizen and also as his daughter. I will not be reporting on the legal case.
That said, my colleagues across MSNBC and NBC News, they have aggressively covered the story, and they’ll continue to do so, as they should.
