Muslim Dem Rep.: We Can’t Abandon Our Values ‘Just Because Cruz Is Scared’

ellisonCongressman Keith Ellison, one of two Muslims currently serving in Congress, delivered a blistering rebuke of Ted Cruz and other Republicans tonight for what he deemed offensive anti-Muslim rhetoric in the wake of the Brussels attacks.

He told Chris Hayes––reporting from Brussels tonight––that the United States just can’t toss aside its values “because Cruz is scared,” referring to the GOP presidential candidate’s proposal to “patrol” Muslim neighborhoods.

Ellison said that he is offended on behalf of American Muslims who don’t like being scapegoated by presidential candidates.

He said that relationships with Muslim communities are important and “people like Trump and Cruz are not helping.”

Ellison even called out Cruz for having a Muslim “hater”––Frank Gaffney––as a top advisor on his campaign.

He even said the nasty anti-Muslim rhetoric on the extreme right has “exhibited features of fascism.”
