Nancy Grace: With Lethal Injection Becoming Too Costly, Is Firing Squad a Viable Alternative?

Joining CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin on Wednesday to discuss a controversial proposal by a Wyoming legislator to reinstitute firing squads as an execution method, HLN host Nancy Grace appeared warm to the proposal. While she said that her preferred method of execution would continue to be lethal injection, she noted that firing squads are both inexpensive and lead to a quick death for the condemned.

“There’s no pretty way to die,” Grace said when asked if she agreed with the Wyoming lawmaker’s proposal. “It ain’t no tea party, Brooke, when we’re talking about the death penalty.”

Grace added that the cocktail of lethal chemicals used in the lethal injection process are becoming more expensive and harder to find. “There’s also a fear that lethal injection may, at some point, be declared cruel and inhuman which would make it unconstitutional,” she added.

Grace agreed with Baldwin that firing squads are “barbaric.” However, she said that, of the methods of execution, few are entirely humane. “I would not recommend old sparky,” Grace said to a cringing Baldwin. “That’s kind of a friendly name.”

“The argument is that firing squad is quick and easy and it costs about $25,000 to pull it off, even though a bullet costs you $0.99,” she continued.

“In my mind, lethal injection is the most humane,” Grace added. “If we can put a man on the moon, there’s got to be a way – even if it brings on more expense – to put a person to sleep before they receive the death penalty.”
