Nation Editor: ‘Corporate Media’ Try to Marginalize Progressives Like Sanders

heuvelNation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel denied on CNN’s Reliable Sources Sunday morning that the ragtag collection of publications comprising the left-wing media (to be distinguished from the ‘liberal media’) was not going easy on progressive candidate Bernie Sanders, but that it was about time a figure like Sanders got some mainstream press coverage.

“He’s speaking about ideas and solutions that this country’s hungry for,” vanden Heuvel said. “Will the gatekeepers…keep saying he’s unelectable, or will they give him and his issues the space?”

“The corporate media has gone soft on what matters to millions of Americans,” she continued. “Too often the mainstream, corporate media has given us a downsized politics of excluded alternatives,” adding that “Bernie Sanders speaks for millions of Americans… [on] issues that are in essence mainstream, but for too long the corporate media has written off as marginal…There is a policing of the parameters of what is considered acceptable politics.”

Sanders himself made much the same point this morning on one of the Sunday shows, which vanden Heuvel pointed out he hadn’t appeared on until last year. Meanwhile, “John McCain sleeps at Meet the Press.”
