Nikki Haley to Confederate Flag Supporters: ‘We’re Not Trying to Take Away Your Heritage’

nikki haleyAfter the Confederate flag came down this morning at the South Carolina state capitol, Governor Nikki Haley spoke with CNN’s Don Lemon about the tough but necessary decision to take it down. Haley said taking the flag down means “one less reason to divide” people in South Carolina.

Lemon brought up the complaints from pro-flag advocates saying things like “America is under attack.” Haley wanted to make something clear: “We’re not trying to take away your heritage. We’re not trying to take away the family members––that sacrifice. What we are trying to do is not give people a reason to hurt.”

Haley told Lemon she wants to start talking more about race, especially to young people, as part of an ongoing effort to bring people together.
