NYT’s Thomas Friedman Slams GOP: They’ve ‘Laid Down for a Demented Man’
Speaking to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Friday, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman slammed the Republican party for laying down for a “demented” Donald Trump.
Earlier in the interview, Friedman said that the president does not respect government.
“Trump believes, first of all, that he can do everything. He or [top White House aide and son-in-law Jared] Kushner,” he said. “I don’t think he has a respect for government.”
Then, Blitzer asked him about a column he wrote in which he said that the only responsible choice for the GOP leadership is to have an intervention where Trump is told he must make a radical change or they will press for his resignation and join calls for his impeachment.
“You see any sign at all that serious numbers of Republicans are beginning to think along those lines?” Blitzer asked.
Friedman replied: “I don’t. It’s really sad. This is a party that has simply laid down for a demented man.”
He added: “They have been laying down for anyone who would energize their base, going back to Sarah Palin and the Tea Party and now it’s Trump… We have a disturbed man as president. That’s very clear. We have a party that is not ready to stand up to it. What worries me is now we’re threatening our institutions.”
