Obama Decries Trump, GOP in Speech: He Vilifies Others and Now They Pretend to be Concerned About Civility?

Former president Barack Obama was in Florida on Friday to support gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum (D) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) for their respective campaigns. And during his speech, he ripped President Donald Trump and the GOP for what he took as insincere calls for civility around the country.

Obama used much of his speech to drag Republicans for using fear tactics to win elections while making promises they don’t really intend to keep. Eventually, the former president went after the GOP for demanding civility in political discourse when they so often attack their political rivals and allow for Trump’s objectionable behavior.

“I’m assuming people must get upset when they see folks that spend all of their time vilifying others, questioning their patriotism, calling them ‘enemies of the people,’ and then suddenly pretending they’re concerned about civility. And we don’t need more elected officials who say ‘oh, well, I’m very concerned,’ or ‘I’m terribly vexed by this bad behavior, but there’s nothing I can do about it.” We need leaders that stand up for what’s right, regardless of party.”

Numerous political observers and critics of Trump have argued recently that he has a responsibility to act with more careful conduct in light of the recent acts of violence around the country. While Obama was giving his speech, however, Trump accused the media of creating violence through their “fake news” reporting.
