Obama: I Am Confident Congress Will Vote to Strike Syria

President Obama told reporters on Tuesday that he is confident Congress will support his efforts to initiate military action against Syria, and that he will work with various lawmakers to come up with a resolution that works for all parties.

Before meeting with members of Congress at the White House, Obama told the press: “We have high confidence that Syria used — in an indiscriminate fashion — chemical weapons that killed thousands of people, including over 400 children.”

Asked by a reporter whether he believes he’ll obtain the votes to authorize military action, the president replied: “I am.”

In working with Congress, Obama hopes to come up with a resolution that sends a “clear message” to Bashar al-Assad’s regime that the use of chemical weapons is not allowed under international norms. Failure to act, the president said, would send a signal to not only the Assad regime, but to other hostile nations, that the development and potential use of chemical and/or nuclear weapons will be tolerated.
