President Obama’s Statement on Libya No-Fly Zone

On the heels of a surprising UN vote authorizing a no-fly zone in Libya (as well as “all necessary measures” to protect civilians), President Obama delivered remarks in the White House’s East Room Friday afternoon. The President denounced Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi‘s brutal repression of his own citizens, and announced US plans to join the UN in enforcing the resolution “through military action.”

Some have criticized the President’s actions on Libya, but in achieving an international consensus, and a strong UN resolution that no one initially expected to pass the Security Council, he has lent the effort credibility within the Middle East, while shielding the US from becoming embroiled in another Mideast quagmire.
