Pritzker Throws ‘Hitler’ Comment Back at GOP Congresswoman: ‘I Am Not Going To Be Lectured to by Somebody Who Extols the Virtue of Adolf Hitler’
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D-IL) did not appreciate the line of questioning he received from Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) during a committee meeting on Thursday.
The House Oversight Committee conducted a wild hearing with “sanctuary state governors,” featuring Govs. Pritzker, Kathy Hochul (D-NY), and Tim Walz (MN). Republicans on the committee took turns hectoring the witnesses.
When it was her turn, Miller took issue with Pritzker’s criticism of raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Chicago. She also highlighted the case of 20-year-old Katie Braham, who along with 21-year-old Chloe Polzin, was killed in a hit-and-run in January. Police arrested a 29-year-old undocumented Guatemalan man, who allegedly smashed into their car at high speed from behind while driving drunk. He had previously been deported.
“No family should have to endure this type of loss,” Miller said to Pritzker. “Sir, the family is here. The father is here. Would you like to apologize to Katie’s family? Feel free to direct your comments to me.”
“I am very sorry for their loss,” the governor replied. “I really am.”
“I can only imagine what other instances have taken place but have not been reported,” Miller said. “You have stated that Illinois will not allow local police departments to assist ICE as they work to address the illegal immigration crisis that you helped to create. In light of the crimes that I have mentioned, do you stand by your policy of tying the hands of Illinois law enforcement?”
Pritzker responded by referencing a bizarre comment Miller made in 2021, when she said, “Hitler was right on one thing: He said, ‘Whoever has the youth, has the future.’” The congresswoman eventually apologized for the reference.
“You know, Congresswoman Miller, I am not going to be lectured to by somebody who extols the virtue of Adolf Hitler,”
“Reclaiming my time!” Miller interjected. The hearing moved on.
The governors’ testimonies came amid protests against ongoing raids carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement across the country. Los Angeles, in particular, has seen a series of demonstrations this week after ICE agents raided shops and Home Depot parking lots looking for undocumented workers. President Donald Trump has responded to the protests by deploying the military to the nation’s second-largest city over the objection of Governor Gavin Newsom.
