Republican Congresswoman Accuses Jobs Data Chief Fired by Trump of Being Part of the ‘Deep State’
Rep. Erin Houchin (R-IN) accused the official in charge of the nation’s jobs data of being part of the “deep state” after some unfavorable employment numbers were reported.
President Donald Trump fired Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Friday, baselessly alleging that she “faked the Jobs Numbers” to damage him. The BLS said the economy added an underwhelming 73,000 jobs in July. Moreover, it printed downward revisions for May and June, as 258,000 fewer jobs were added than previously reported.
Houchin joined Sunday’s Fox Report, where Jon Scott welcomed Houchin to the program.
“Seventy-three thousand jobs added,” Scott noted. “The president, obviously disappointed enough that he fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. What do you make of those numbers?”
The congresswoman responded by launching into a defense of Trump’s decision to fire McEntarfer, who she said was a “deep state bureaucrat.”
“The president of the United States has every right to have anybody working with him and for him that he wants to,” Houchin responded. “We can’t live in a society, in a country where a deep state bureaucrat has more authority than the president of the United States.”
Houchin went on to say that BLS data “can be manipulated because it’s based on surveys,” and added that Trump was “well within his rights to replace” the commissioner.
Trump’s termination of McEntarfer took center stage on the Sunday shows. On CNN’s State of the Union, a former BLS chief appointed by Trump said that “there’s no way” the numbers could be faked like Trump alleges. Meanwhile, on Meet the Press, the director of the National Economic Council was made to watch clips of the president touting positive BLS jobs reports in previous months.
