Schumer Blasts Trump for Threatening to ‘Sabotage’ Obamacare: ‘Not What a President Does’
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer gave a statement on Friday where he slammed President Trump for trying to “sabotage” Obamacare and bragging about the political connotations if the health system collapses.
As part of his address, Schumer bemoaned the lack of bipartisanship in current congressional health care debates, and he expressed hope that John McCain‘s surprise vote would mark a turning point. Schumer eventually turned his attention to Trump’s tweets, starting with how the president responded to the health care defeat by saying Obamacare should be allowed to fail.
“His tweet last night said we are going to let the system collapse. We are going to hurt innocent people because we are angry, we lost politically,” Schumer said. “That is not what a president does. I hope our Senate colleagues and our House colleague on his side of the aisle will turn a deaf ear on that.”
Schumer continued to blast Trump for thinking about how advantageous it will be for him if the American health care system actually does fall apart. “If we sabotage the system,” Schumer said, “it will hurt him as well as millions of Americans.”
Schumer went on to express regret that Trump undid McCain’s bipartisan moment by tweeting about how the senate rules should change so the legislature only needs a raw majority to pass laws, not a supermajority. Schumer expressed confusion on this point since the health care bill failed to clear the 51 vote threshold it needed last night.
“His analysis is based on fluff, because he had the 51 votes already with reconciliation, and he couldn’t get it done and he says let’s go down to 51,” said Schumer. “I just don’t get it.”
