Scott Jennings Predicts Trump Will ‘Humiliate’ Jerome Powell for the Next Few Months — And Says Powell ‘Deserves It’

CNN’s Scott Jennings predicted on Thursday that President Donald Trump would humiliate and make Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell “miserable” during his last few months in the role — and argued that Powell “deserves it.”

Trump visited the Fed’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. earlier in the day, where he and Powell bickered over the cost of the renovations currently being done to it. After Abby Phillip expressed her doubt that Trump’s strategy of applying pressure on Powell would yield the lower interest rates he wants, Jennings weighed in.

“Yeah, I don’t know if he’s [Trump] gonna fire him [Powell], doesn’t sound like he’s going to. He doesn’t have that many months left on his term, Trump will be able to put in his own Fed chair,” observed Jennings. “It looks to me like he is planning to just humiliate this person for the next eight months, and make him into a miserable person. And you know what, he deserves it because he should have lowered interest rates, A. B, I’m not sure the Fed’s done all that great of a job over time since Powell has been in, even though Trump did first appoint him. And so maybe he deserves a little of the political theater.”

After Phillip restated the fact that Trump appointed Powell to his position, Jennings quipped that “mistakes were made.”

Powell’s term as chairman is set to end in May 2026. Earlier this month, it was reported that Trump would fire Powell in short order. Trump denied as much, but didn’t let the opportunity to insult his own appointee pass.

“He is doing a lousy job. I’m not talking about that. Fortunately, we get to make a change in the next what, eight months or so. And we’ll pick somebody that’s good,” said Trump at the time, just moments before he deemed Powell a “knucklehead.”
