Sen. Chris Coons: Trump’s ‘Calm Before the Storm’ Was Just Him Acting Like a ‘Reality TV Star’

Thursday evening, President Donald Trump created something of a media firestorm when he told reporters during a White House photo op that this was the “calm before the storm,” leading to all kinds of speculation over what exactly he meant. Was he talking about besieged Secretary of State Rex Tillerson? North Korea? Iran? Something else altogether?

With both Trump and his the White House press team refusing to clarify his remarks, the speculation has continued throughout the weekend. During an appearance on CNN’s Smerconish this morning, Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) weighed in on the mystery.

“You know, frankly I think he was just continuing a tradition of being a reality TV star who tries to hold the world’s attention,” Coons told host Michael Smerconish. “Tries to make sure that folks don’t change the channel.”

He added, “That was a very ominous warning, but given his blustering against North Korea and Kim Jong-un, I’m not sure that that is predicting any imminent attack or any imminent military effort by the United States.”

The Deleware lawmaker went on to say that he’s concerned that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been undermined by the president when it comes to North Korea and that “this sort of TV headline-grabbing move” doesn’t advance America’s national security.

Following Coons’ segment, Trump took to Twitter to deliver some more blustery threats to North Korea, this time saying “only one thing will work” with them.
