Sen. John Kennedy Tells Hannity: ‘If You Hate Cops’ Then ‘Call a Methhead The Next Time You Get Into Trouble’

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) had a suggestion for critics of police officers: call a criminal — specifically, a “methhead” — next time they get in trouble.

Kennedy made the comments to Sean Hannity in an appearance on his eponymous Fox News program Monday night as part of a broader discussion of recent controversial incidents regarding police officers killing Black people.

“Cops have about 60 million encounters with Americans every year,” said Kennedy, saying it was important to have investigations and wait for facts instead of jumping to conclusions.

Kennedy then listed several propositions that he said he thought “reflect common sense,” including that most cops don’t go to work hoping to hurt a person of color. “Cops are necessary,” he continued, so “if you support defunding the police, you have tested positive for stupid.”

He then turned his critique to members of the media, saying that many of them “have a narrative and they only want to cherry pick, and pick instances which show cops at their worst.”

“I’ve said it before,” said Kennedy, “if you hate cops just because they’re cops, then feel free to call a criminal, call a methhead, the next time you get in trouble.”

“I do not accept, nor do I think most Americans accept, that most cops are bad people, or racist. They don’t get up every day and go into work hoping they can hurt somebody. Most of them get up every day and hope they can themselves come back home alive.”
