Senator Ron Johnson Criticizes Trump for ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ on Fox Business
Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) has long been a loyal, vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and his MAGA agenda. However, during a recent appearance on Fox Business, he offered rare and sharp criticism of how Trump is handling the FY 2026 budget.
Trump is advocating something he’s calling the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Speaker Mike Johnson described as an all-encompassing piece of legislation that would cover border security, the budget, energy, the economy, taxes, and “dismantling the deep state.”
Fox Business anchor David Asman asked about the tax bill component during Johnson’s Friday appearance, asking, “Will we get it before Memorial Day?”
“No, no, there’s no way because again, unfortunately, President Trump chose the one Big, Beautiful Bill,” Johnson replied flatly.
“What he should have done is the multiple-step process,” he explained. “I suggested three steps: get the border funding, the second step, just extend the current tax law. So we take an automatic not if we don’t come down with a reasonable pre-pandemic level of spending. There’s enough of us in the Senate that will not agree to that.”
“Boy, that’s bad news,” Asman replied, notably not pushing back on the senator’s apparent criticism of President Trump.
The Republican caucuses in both the Senate and House have large been in lock step with the Trump administration to date. Any on-air criticism of the current White House is notable and may reveal signs of a fraying relationship amid economic turmoil brought about by Trump’s controversial tariff policy.
