Stephen Colbert Offers Trump Rare Praise – Then Checks If He’s ‘Still Canceled’

The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert gave President Donald Trump “credit” for brokering the Gaza peace deal – “he did something good” – and, with a wink, wondered if that might save him from cancellation.

The deal, which was finalized on Monday with a signing ceremony in Egypt, saw the last 20 remaining hostages held by Hamas released as part of a ceasefire exchange that also saw the release of 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in return.

Opening his show, Colbert paused for a moment to acknowledge the achievement: “There is some good news out there. Because, today, thanks to Trump’s newly brokered ceasefire in Gaza, all living Israeli hostages and almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners have been released. It’s important. Credit where credit is due – Donald Trump did something good.”

Colbert, who joked he’d missed a “doozy” of a week while off-air, quipped moments later: “Are we still canceled? Are you sure? I tried.”

The punchline landed against the backdrop of his own show’s uncertain future. In August, CBS confirmed that The Late Show would end in May over “financial constraints,” shortly after Colbert criticized the network’s $16 million settlement with Trump.
