Sunny Hostin Claims ‘White Privilege’ is a Factor in Caitlin Clark’s Popularity: ‘More Relatable to More People Because She’s White’

The View co-host Sunny Hostin explained her belief that Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark benefits from “White privilege” and “pretty privilege.”

Wednesday’s episode began with a discussion about Clark and her role in the league’s growing popularity. The 22-year-old brought unprecedented attention to women’s college basketball, playing in multiple games that broke ratings records. Her professional debut was also ESPN’s most-watched WNBA game ever.

According to Hostin, race plays some role in that.

“If Caitlin Clark is the vehicle that will bring this sport that I have loved so much and so long,” Hostin said, “to little five-year-old girls playing in Harlem, I say, ‘Yes, bravo.’ I have no problem with that.

“With that being said, I do think that there is a thing called ‘pretty privilege.’ There is a thing called ‘White privilege.’ There is a thing called ‘tall privilege.’ And we have to acknowledge that.”

Hostin then brought up Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner, who routinely played in Russia during the off-season for more money. That aspect of her career ended after she was imprisoned in the country for having a cannabis cartridge in her luggage.

“So now, Caitlin Clark is bringing this money, these sponsorships — we hope — into the league and other players will benefit from it,” Hostin continued. “But I do think that she is more relatable to more people because she’s white, because she’s attractive.”
